Recovering critical materials with a low-impact process

DEScycle has developed a low-temperature solvent process that recovers valuable metals from electronic waste. Conventional recovery methods are typically energy-intensive; DEScycle's approach is designed to reduce environmental impact while improving recovery efficiency.

The company has demonstrated metal recovery rates of more than 99% at bench scale, and reports that its process could reduce carbon emissions by up to 98% and energy use by around 48% compared with conventional approaches.

A growing strategic priority for the UK

Demand for critical materials continues to rise across advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure and electrification, making the recovery and reuse of valuable resources increasingly important to long-term economic resilience and supply chain security.

The investment comes as the UK government increases its focus on domestic critical minerals capability through a recently announced £50 million programme supporting projects across extraction, processing and recycling.

From demonstration to deployment

The investment follows a period of strong momentum for DEScycle, including strategic agreements with Cisco and Mitsubishi, and the formation of a joint venture with UK waste recycler GAP Group to support delivery of its first commercial-scale facility.

With its environmental permit secured, commissioning of the Wilton Centre demonstration plant is now underway. Once operational, the facility will demonstrate the technology at an industrially relevant scale - a critical step towards commercial deployment.

Backed by technical expertise as well as capital

The investment builds on CPI's existing relationship with DEScycle, which began through collaborative R&D and has evolved into ongoing investment and technical support. Through CPI Enterprises, DEScycle has advanced from technology development to commercial deployment, drawing on CPI's technical expertise and scale-up infrastructure at sites across the north-east.

Why we invested

Stephane Mery, Partner at EverQuest Capital Partners, said: "This investment reflects EverQuest's ambition to back companies with the potential to transform industrial systems and create long-term value. DEScycle has demonstrated a compelling combination of technical validation, commercial traction and scalable deployment potential. Through our partnership with CPI, we are able to support ambitious businesses with both investment and access to the expertise and infrastructure needed to accelerate growth."

Dr Leonidas Howden, CEO at DEScycle, said: "We are delighted to have the continued support of CPI and now EverQuest, as we bring our process to the Wilton Centre, demonstrating our DES technology at an industrially relevant scale, whilst building on the validation we've already seen through our partnerships with Cisco and Mitsubishi and our joint venture with GAP Group. Critical materials recovery is a great opportunity for the UK to strengthen its supply chain resilience whilst cutting emissions, and this funding lets us prove that at scale."
